Approach and anchoring
Inside the rade de Lorient, sheltered from NW, N, NE, W and E winds by the surrounding shorelines, exposed to S and SW down the entrance channel. Sand bottom. Keep clear of the commercial shipping channel into Lorient and of the ferry track to the île de Groix.
Practical
No shore landing at the fort itself. The marina of Kernével is 0.4 NM to the N for berths, fuel, water and chandlery, and the port of Port-Louis lies 0.6 NM to the SE.
History
The fort de Kernével was built between 1696 and 1700 to the design of Vauban, completing the defensive system of the rade together with the citadelle de Port-Louis opposite. During the Second World War the Kriegsmarine set up the headquarters of admiral Karl Dönitz and the U-boat command in the villas of Kernével between 1940 and 1942.
