Full-service marina and boatyard at Delaware City, sitting in the old channel of the original eastern lock of the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal, on the Delaware River.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Reached from the Delaware River at the eastern end of the C and D Canal. The marina lies in the surviving stretch of the original 1829 canal, off the modern sea-level cut. Strong tidal currents run on the river and through the canal, turning roughly at high and low water. VHF channel 9.
Practical
135 floating berths for vessels up to 250 ft, with modern shore power. There is a fuel berth with petrol and diesel, ice, a well-stocked ship's store, and a boatyard with a 35-tonne travel lift and crane service for repairs and haul-out.
Ashore
Delaware City has shops and restaurants within walking distance of the marina. Fort Delaware State Park, on Pea Patch Island in the river, is reached by passenger ferry from the town.
History
Delaware City was laid out in 1826 by the Newbold family, who expected it to rival Philadelphia as a Delaware River port. It grew as an operating base after the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal opened in 1829 with locks at Delaware City, St Georges and Chesapeake City.
