Drying harbour at the head of the Daoulas river, a ria on the south shore of the Rade de Brest in Finistère.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Access only around high water. The river dries almost entirely at low water, max draught of 1 m on the mooring line at neap tides. Approach from the Rade de Brest by the Anse du Poulmic then the buoyed channel of the Daoulas river, watch the oyster tables marked with withies on both banks. Four moorings laid by the commune, plus drying berths alongside the old quay.
Practical
Water at the quay, no electricity on site, no fuel. Bakery, butcher and Coccinelle grocery within 500 m in the town centre. Hypermarket at Daoulas 1.5 km from the quay. Bus line 32 to Brest, journey of 35 minutes.
Ashore
Romanesque abbey of Daoulas founded in the 12th century by the canons of Saint Augustine, 600 m from the quay, with a cloister of 1167 and a garden of medicinal plants open from April to October. The GR34 coastal path passes above the port and reaches Logonna-Daoulas in 7 km along the ria. Oyster farm tours of the Rade de Brest by arrangement.
History
Daoulas was a religious and market town from the 12th century onward, tied to the abbey and to small scale coastal trade in the Rade de Brest. The abbey was partly ruined at the Revolution, bought by the department of Finistère in 1984 and now operates as a cultural centre with summer exhibitions.
