Guide

Approach and anchoring

Open approach from the gulf. Rocky bottom, which means variable holding; test the set before leaving the boat and prefer visible sand patches where possible. Shelter from NW round to E. Exposed to SW wind and to the libeccio swell that rolls into the gulf.

Practical

Forain anchorage only, no services. Porto Pollo lies 4.9 nm to the SE with a small port and visitors' berths. Port de Propriano lies 10.1 nm to the SE with full services, diesel and chandlery.

Ashore

Tour de Capu di Muru, a Genoese watchtower from the late 16th century, stands on the headland at the SW end of the Coti-Chiavari coast and can be reached by coastal track. The hamlet of Coti-Chiavari sits up on the ridge above the anchorage with a view over the full sweep of the gulf.

History

Capu di Muru was one of the coastal watchtowers built by the Republic of Genoa between the 16th and 17th centuries to warn the Corsican villages against Barbary raids.
