Guide

Approach and anchoring

Access through the lock of the Rance tidal dam which also carries the D168 road. Lock schedules follow tide and traffic, published by EDF. Max draught at the centre 0.9 m, limiting use to dinghies and shallow keelboats. Strong tidal currents on both sides of the dam.

Practical

Mooring on buoys and pontoons reserved for club members and sailing school trainees. Slipway for dinghies. No fuel on site. Saint-Malo Les Sablons marina 2 NM N and Dinard marina 1.7 NM NW for visitors.

Ashore

Footpath along the Rance dam to the viewpoint over the turbines. Village centre of La Richardais within 500 m with bakery and small shops. Coast path to Dinard along the estuary to the north.

History

The Rance tidal power station was inaugurated in 1966 as the first industrial tidal power plant in the world, using the 8 m tidal range of the estuary to drive 24 bulb turbines.
