Approach and anchoring

The channel runs along the Key Biscayne shoreline and is the usual route out to the Atlantic before a Bahamas crossing. The mud bottom gives good holding. Shelter comes from NE through SE; the adjacent No Name Harbor offers fuller all-round protection behind mangroves, with a least depth of about 3 metres.

Practical

Fresh water is available ashore. No Name Harbor charges 20 dollars per boat per night for overnight anchoring, paid at honour stations along the seawall. The Boaters Grill there has restrooms, showers and a laundry. Crandon Park Marina lies about 3 nautical miles to the north.

Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park surrounds the channel, with a white-sand beach and the Cape Florida Light, a brick lighthouse first built in 1825 and the oldest standing structure in Miami-Dade County.

History

The Cape Florida Light dates from 1825. It was burned during a Seminole attack in 1836, rebuilt in 1846 and has since withstood close to two centuries of hurricanes and erosion.
