Anchorage off Bald Head Island, at the eastern side of the Cape Fear River mouth in Brunswick County, North Carolina.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
The Cape Fear River approach carries unpredictable currents and abrupt depth changes. South of the cape lie the Frying Pan Shoals, which extend roughly 30 miles offshore and demand a wide berth. Bald Head Island Marina sits about 2 miles east of ICW mile marker 307. Southport Marina is 2.2 miles to the north-west. Sand bottom.
Ashore
Bald Head Island has no cars; golf carts and bicycles are available for hire. Old Baldy, the oldest standing lighthouse in North Carolina, dates from 1817 and can be climbed. Maritime forest trails and the conservancy turtle programme are within reach of the marina.
