Approach and anchoring

Approach from the west. Strong tidal streams run off the Pointe du Raz to the south and the Pointe du Van to the north, so time entry for slack water or with a fair tide. Anchor on sand in 4 to 8 metres. The bay is protected from north-east through south, but any westerly sector sends swell straight in.

Practical

Forain anchorage with no services. Nearest harbour is Port du Men-Brial on Île de Sein, 5.5 NM west. Audierne lies 7.2 NM east via the Raz de Sein.

Ashore

Long sand beach used by surfers. GR 34 coastal path along the cliffs to the Pointe du Raz, classified Grand Site de France, 2 km south. Chapelle Saint-They above the Pointe du Van, 2 km north.

History

The bay owes its name to the local tradition that the bodies of sailors lost at sea washed up on its shore. The name appears in maritime charts from the 18th century.
