Guide

Approach and anchoring

Up the Auray river from Port-Navalo, about 6 NM of winding channel marked by lateral buoys. Tidal streams up to 4 knots in the narrows of Le Rocher. VHF 9 for the syndicate office. Confluence with the Bono river 0.5 NM below the Kerisper suspension bridge, air draught 25 m.

Practical

Sand bottom, holding good. Protection nearly all round except along the SW fetch of the main channel. Tender landing at Le Bono village 0.7 NM NE for bakery, butcher and grocery. Water point at Saint-Goustan quay 1.5 NM upstream.

Ashore

Saint-Goustan old port of Auray at 1.5 NM, a medieval quarter with 15th century timber houses and the stone bridge from 1295. Benjamin Franklin landed there in 1776 on his way to negotiate with Louis XVI. Chapel of Notre-Dame de Béquerel on the Bono side at 1 km from the village.

History

The Bono river was a site of small coastal shipbuilding until the 1950s and of scallop dredging tchalupas, lug-rigged sloops still sailed today by the local heritage association.
