Approach and anchoring

Approach from the Golfe de Valinco keeping clear of the Campomoro headland to the west. Drop the hook on sand in 4 to 6 m, holding to about 20 m off the beach. A swell tends to work in even in light weather, and a westerly or north-westerly sets it rolling, so keep the spot for settled conditions and fall back on Propriano, a three-minute tender ride away, when the wind turns. Watch the rocks off the middle and the edges of the beach.

Practical

No services at the anchorage. Port de Propriano lies 0.8 NM south with diesel, water, electricity, 450 berths and a chandlery. Porto Pollo at 5.1 NM west offers a smaller marina with a fuel berth.

Ashore

Menhirs of Cauria and the Alignement de Palaggiu, the largest menhir field in the Mediterranean with 258 standing stones, lie 15 km south near Sartène. Beach of Cupabia sand bay across the gulf. Sartène old town and its Musée de la préhistoire corse sit 13 km inland from Propriano.

History

The Golfe de Valinco saw the Barbary raid of 1583 that emptied the villages of Olmeto and Propriano. Genoese watchtowers of Campomoro and Capu di Muru still stand on the headlands enclosing the gulf.
