Guide
Approach and anchoring
Open approach from the west with no off-lying dangers in the main bay. Drop anchor on sand in 4 to 8 metres off the beach north of the Sagone river mouth. The sand gives solid holding but the clear patches are hard to pick out among the posidonia, and many unofficial buoys clutter the bay. Sheltered from most directions but open to the south-west.
Practical
Port de Sagone lies 0.1 NM north for water, waste and basic supplies. A concrete dinghy pontoon and a marked landing channel make it easy to get the tender ashore on the beach. Bakery and restaurants along the seafront, with further shops about 2.5 km away on foot and no bus.
Ashore
Restaurants line the beach, among them the Presta and a family table serving produce from its own farm. Genoese tower of Sagone at the south end of the bay, a 16th century watchtower on the headland. Beach of Sagone runs 1.5 km along the shore. Cargèse, known for its Greek Orthodox and Latin Catholic churches facing each other, sits 4.2 NM west along the coast.
History
The gulf was the seat of the medieval bishopric of Sagone, whose ruined cathedral of Sant Appianu stands inland near the river. The Genoese tower was built in the 16th century as part of the coastal defence line against Barbary raids.
