Mooring buoy field in the gulf of Sagone on the west coast of Corsica, between the gulf of Ajaccio to the south and the gulf of Porto to the north. There is no marina, only private buoys managed locally plus a welcome pontoon.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Approach from the west across the open gulf. Pick up one of the private white mooring buoys off the quay, where several are often free, or anchor in the bay on sand in about 4 m. Avoid the large yellow buoy east of the field, which serves a cave-tour shuttle and may return late at night. The gulf is open to westerly winds and swell, and an offshore breeze can build from the SW in the afternoon; the bay can be uncomfortable with libeccio.
Practical
No marina services here. A local calls by in the early evening to collect a fee of about 20 euros a night for the buoys, and the published telephone numbers do not connect. There is no fuel and no water, the nearest being at Cargèse to the west. Restaurants line the beach with more in the village, and the shops are grouped on the south side of the bay.
Ashore
Sandy beach of Sagone along the bay. Genoese tower ruins on the northern headland. Village of Cargèse with its Greek and Latin churches 4.2 nautical miles to the west.
History
Sagone was an episcopal see from the sixth century to the French Revolution. The ruins of the former Romanesque cathedral Sant'Appianu stand 2 km inland from the port.
