Approach and anchoring

Reached by the Canal du Midi between locks Homps and Ognon. Canal width about 20 metres, guaranteed draught 1.40 m, bridge clearance 3.30 m. Maximum vessel length on the canal is 30 m, beam 5.35 m. Approach at idle speed, give way to hire boats at the lock queues.

Practical

Small private base. Boats lie alongside a hard quay on the bank, with water and electricity metered at 10 euros for 24 hours. Overnight mooring is free of charge, and there are toilets and showers, with the harbour office doubling as a tourist office. Bread and basic groceries at Homps 2.8 NM NE, a few shops about 1 km away, full supermarkets in Lézignan-Corbières 7 km by road. No fuel on site, diesel at Homps.

Ashore

A restaurant stands right by the port. Towpath along the canal suitable for walking and cycling, the Canal des Deux Mers velo route follows the south bank. Minervois wine estates within 3 km, with tastings at Château de Paraza and Château de Ventenac. Village of Argens-Minervois and its 14th century castle at 4 km east.

History

Part of the Canal du Midi built by Pierre-Paul Riquet between 1666 and 1681 to link the Atlantic to the Mediterranean. The canal has been on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 1996.
