History
Homps was a commercial wine port from the late 17th century, shipping Minervois barrels to Bordeaux and Sete via the canal. The old stone warehouses along the quay date from that period. The canal itself, built 1666 to 1681 by Pierre-Paul Riquet, is a UNESCO site since 1996.
Story
Homps was the point where Minervois wine barrels were transferred between the canal and carts heading to the Aude river, making it one of the busiest wine loading quays on the canal in the 18th century.
