Canal du Midi halt at Trebes, downstream of Carcassonne, at the confluence of the Orbiel with the Aude valley in Occitanie.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Reached by the Canal du Midi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996. Arrival from the west through the triple staircase lock of Trebes, three chambers that raise or lower boats by about 5 m. Lock operating hours set by Voies navigables de France. Gauge restricted to the historic Freycinet profile.
Practical
The quay is largely a Le Boat hire base; only about three visitor moorings are available for other craft, on the opposite bank and without services. Water and electricity bollards and the captain's office are on the hire-base quay, with bike rental for the towpath. Bakery, supermarket and restaurants within 300 m in the village, diesel station at 500 m.
Ashore
Plane-tree-lined towpath to the Cite de Carcassonne at 7 km by bike, UNESCO medieval fortified city. Abbey of Lagrasse, one of the oldest Benedictine houses in Languedoc, at 25 km south. Minervois and Corbieres vineyards all around the canal, with wine estates open to visitors from 3 km onwards.
History
The Canal du Midi was built between 1667 and 1681 under Pierre-Paul Riquet, linking the Atlantic via the Garonne to the Mediterranean at Sete. Trebes has been a working stop on the canal since its opening, with its stone staircase locks dating from the original construction.
