Riquet's canal runs 240 km from Toulouse to the Thau lagoon and has been a Unesco site since 1996. It climbs from Toulouse to the Naurouze summit, 189 metres up near Port-Lauragais, then drops through Castelnaudary and its 7 hectare Grand Bassin, Carcassonne and its walled Cité, Trèbes, Homps and Le Somail. After the Malpas tunnel, the eight-chamber Fonseranes staircase and the Orb aqueduct lead into Béziers. Permitted draught is 1.50 metres, but silt stops boats drawing 1.40. Locks work from late March to early November.
