Lakeside marina of 2050 berths on the Gulf of Saint-Tropez, designed in the 1960s by architect François Spoerry as a lacustrine village with a canal network.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Entrance at the mouth of the Giscle river, on the west shore of the Gulf of Saint-Tropez, dredged channel with red and green jetty lights. Maximum draught 3 m. The canals inside are narrow, so enter and leave in light wind; the marineros escort boats to their berth and take their lines, many berths being stern-to at the back of the basins. Exposed to the east wind which sets a chop across the gulf. Call on VHF 9 before entering. Saint-Tropez lies 3 nautical miles across the bay to the east.
Practical
2050 berths across three harbour basins. Water, electricity, diesel and petrol at the fuel berth. Booking is paid in advance by card once the harbourmaster confirms a place. Reckon on around 50 euros a night in season, less in the shoulder months. Sanitary blocks are few, small and can be a walk from the berth, with shower access charged and closed overnight. Boats anchored in the gulf may send a tender in and use the free annexe berths marked Réserve Annexe Résident. Supermarkets and all shops within 400 m, market on Thursday and Sunday mornings.
Ashore
Lacustrine village by François Spoerry with its canals, bridges and Église Saint-François-d'Assise of 1969 whose tower offers a view over the gulf. Passenger ferries run from the church square across to Saint-Tropez and other resorts on the gulf. Plage de Port-Grimaud starting at the south jetty. Medieval village of Grimaud and the Château des Grimaldi ruins at 4 km inland.
History
Port-Grimaud was designed from 1966 by Alsatian architect François Spoerry on reclaimed marshland. The village was classified as 20th-century heritage by the French Ministry of Culture in 2002.
Story
François Spoerry refused to sell any of the houses to companies or rental pools, to keep the village as a lived-in place. He himself is buried in the small lakeside chapel he designed.
