Approach and anchoring
Approach from the north-east, rounding the Pointe des Canebiers. Depths run 5 to 10 m over sand with rock patches and protected posidonia. For the best hold aim for the large sand pocket about 0.3 NM off the shore in 7 to 12 m and drop clear of the weed, since the posidonia patches let an anchor drag. The bay is open to east and south-east, so take shelter in Saint-Tropez harbour 1.3 NM to the west in fresh E winds. By day the wash of yachts and tour boats crossing the gulf sets up a tiring roll, though nights are usually calm. An intermittent sewage smell drifts over the bay on some evenings.
Ashore
The bay is overlooked by La Madrague, the villa bought by Brigitte Bardot in 1958. Land the dinghy at the concrete pier beside the lifeguard station, which has cleats for a painter, as the pontoons by the sailing school and the boatyard are private. Coastal path runs south to the plage des Salins 2 km away. Saint-Tropez old town and the Citadelle are 25 minutes on foot via the sentier du littoral.
History
The bay was used as a backdrop in the 1955 film 'Et Dieu créa la femme' by Roger Vadim, which turned Saint-Tropez into an international destination.
