Marina of 500 berths at the head of the Valinco gulf, on the west coast of Corsica.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Approach from the Valinco gulf, a wide opening protected from western swell. Max draught 5 m allows large yachts. Entrance between two jetties with red and green lights. VHF 9 for the harbour office, which answers promptly and usually sends a dinghy to help with mooring. The entrance to the east basin is narrow and on a tight turn, so take it with care.
Practical
500 berths with visitor pontoons. Fuel station on the quay with diesel and petrol. Water and electricity are free, WiFi works well, and there is a self-service launderette; the showers and toilets are clean but dated, with water that runs very hot and cannot be adjusted. Boats under about 12 metres are berthed in the west basin opposite the ferry berth, which is noisy from early morning, its generators and departures around 1800. Supermarkets, bakeries and restaurants line the Avenue Napoléon direct from the quays, and large grocery orders can be delivered to the dock. Waste pump-out on site.
Ashore
Sandy beach of Propriano extends south of the port. Prehistoric site of Filitosa, with its carved menhir-statues, lies 17 km to the north. Coastal walk to the Scoglio Longo headland 2 km south along the gulf shore. Among the restaurants, Le Rescator and Alba Nova are well regarded, and the bakery A Tramuntana sells traditional Corsican bread that keeps for days.
History
Propriano was developed as a port for shipping olive oil and wine during the 19th century, replacing the older roadstead of Porto Pollo. The town was occupied by Italian then German forces during World War II and liberated in September 1943.
