Guide

Approach and anchoring

Approach from the north-east through the Baie de Bourgneuf. Sand bottom, good holding. Sheltered from S, SW and W, but it rolls once the wind backs into the NE, and even 13 to 15 knots from the E or NE raise a short chop off the Côte de Jade that makes it untenable. The outer buoys towards the open sea carry the most water; the inner ones leave little under the keel at big coefficients. Strong ebb streams. VHF 72; Noirmoutier-en-l'Île harbour 1.3 NM SW for refuge.

Practical

No services at the anchorage. A handful of orange visitor buoys lie on the north side of the field, the rest private; if they are full, call the harbour, which may assign a white buoy marked red. The fee runs up to about 25 euros a night, collected by the harbour launch on its morning round. Dinghy landing on the beach. Estacade wooden pier with cafés and seasonal bathing cabins on the foreshore.

Ashore

Bois de la Chaise oak forest directly behind the beach, marked loops of 2 to 5 km. Noirmoutier-en-l'Île town at 1.3 km with the 12th century château, salt marshes and the famous Passage du Gois causeway accessible at low water 10 km to the south.
