Fishing and yachting harbour of 600 berths on the north-western tip of Noirmoutier, first deepwater shelter south of the Loire estuary.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Approach from the west leaving the Pierre Moine cardinal to the south, then head for the green and red pier lights. Sea breaks on the reefs of Le Martroger to the north-west, keep the cardinal mark clear. The entrance and channel shoal, and boats drawing much over 1.5 m cannot get in or out near low water on the bigger coefficients, so time the arrival for the rising tide and keep to the middle of the channel. VHF 9.
Practical
Visitor berths on the eastern side of the basin have no finger pontoons, just a few places along the pontoon exposed to the fishing boats' wakes, with rafting of several boats when busy, so watch a strong NE wind. Water, electricity, fuel berth, crane 27 t, boatyard and careening area. Capitainerie with WC and showers. Rates run high, around 32 to 57 euros by size and season, with a loyalty card giving a free night every five outside July and August. Fish auction and trawler fleet on the western quay. Supermarket at 300 m, restaurants along the quay.
Ashore
Plage des Lutins at 400 m east of the port. Coastal path GR 80 runs directly from the harbour towards the Pointe du Devin. A free bus links the port to the rest of Noirmoutier in July and August, reaching Noirmoutier-en-l'Île with its castle and salt market at 7 km to the south-east, a good ride by bike as well.
History
L'Herbaudière became the island's main fishing port in the 19th century, taking over from the silted basin of Noirmoutier-en-l'Île. The outer breakwaters were extended during the 1970s to create the present marina alongside the trawler basin.
