Guide

Approach and anchoring

Open roadstead with approach directly from the south. Sand bottom. Shelter from N, NW, NE and E, exposed to S and SW swell, untenable in a mistral backing westerly. Anchoring is banned throughout the bay and only allowed beyond 300 m from shore, where the swell makes it uncomfortable. The buoys are managed by Port Héracléa at Cavalaire, VHF 09 in summer.

Practical

Around 70 buoys laid from spring to autumn, taking boats up to about 13 m, fees paid to the attendant on the water. They are dear for what they offer, roughly 25 euros for a 34-footer and up to about 55 euros for an 11 m boat, with no water, electricity or sanitary. No service pontoon. Beach landing by tender. Small shops, bakery and restaurants in the village of Le Canadel behind the beach.

Ashore

Part of the commune of Le Rayol-Canadel-sur-Mer. The TropiCana Club, a restaurant on the beach, is reachable by tender. Domaine du Rayol, a Mediterranean botanical garden run by the Conservatoire du Littoral, sits 1.5 km west along the coast road. Sentier du littoral runs from the beach east toward Cap Nègre.

History

Le Canadel was one of the landing points of Operation Dragoon on 15 August 1944, when American troops of the 3rd Infantry Division came ashore on this stretch of the Var coast.
