Deep-water marina in the rade de Lorient on the Larmor-Plage shore, 1,000 berths with 5 m draught available at all tides.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Access through the Passe de l'Ouest of the rade de Lorient between Port-Louis and Larmor-Plage, buoyed and lit for night entry. Strong ebb streams in the pass at spring tides, and a tidal stream also runs through the marina itself, so adjust the berthing track and ask for the tender when the current is strong. Marina entrance opens NE into the rade, 0.4 nm S of Lorient La Base. VHF 9.
Practical
1,000 berths on pontoons, fuel berth with diesel, water and electricity on all pontoons, sanitaries with showers, boatyard with travel lift. Capitainerie open year-round, and good value at around 28 euros a night for a 42-foot boat. The office lends bikes free, with baskets and trailers, useful as the nearest supermarket is about 15 minutes away by bike, and a bakery stand sets up by the office each morning in season. A chandlery lies across the bridge on the Lorient side. Bus line 20 to Lorient centre from a stop 150 m from the marina.
Ashore
Plage de Port-Maria at Larmor-Plage village 900 m W of the marina, which holds a market. Three or four restaurants and a bar sit by the marina. Cité de la Voile Éric Tabarly and submarine base museum at Lorient La Base, 0.4 nm N across the rade, accessible by dinghy or the maritime shuttle Batobus from the Kernével pontoon.
History
Kernével was a German U-boat command post during World War II, hosting admiral Dönitz's staff from 1940 to 1942 in the Villa Kerillon still visible on the shore opposite the Lorient submarine pens.
