Approach and anchoring

Inside the rade de Lorient, sheltered from NW through E by the surrounding shores, exposed to S and SW down the entrance channel. Anchor inside the channel buoy, clear of the Lorient commercial fairway and the Groix ferry track. Holding on sand is variable, with weed and debris including old tyres, and the bottom shoals fast towards the beach. Much of the room is taken by private moorings, and wash from marina-bound boats chops it up by day, easing in the evening.

Practical

No shore landing at the fort itself. The marina of Kernével is 0.4 NM to the N for berths, fuel, water and chandlery, and the port of Port-Louis lies 0.6 NM to the SE.

History

The fort de Kernével was built between 1696 and 1700 to the design of Vauban, completing the defensive system of the rade together with the citadelle de Port-Louis opposite. During the Second World War the Kriegsmarine set up the headquarters of admiral Karl Dönitz and the U-boat command in the villas of Kernével between 1940 and 1942.
