Anchorage in the lee of Bréhat island, Côtes-d'Armor, over sand.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Approach via the Chenal du Ferlas from the south or the Chenal de Bréhat from the west, both marked. Strong tidal streams run up to 4 knots around the island at springs; boats lie to wind and current by turns, so watch the swing when anchoring among others. Holding is good on mud and sand, but the sheltered pools dry on the bigger coefficients. Protection from SW, W and NW, exposed to the NE; shift to Port-Clos or the south side if a northeasterly sets in.
Practical
Anchoring around Bréhat is now regulated by the commune under a mooring zone. Parts are closed to anchoring and laid with buoys, including paying green buoys at the entrance to La Chambre; Trou de la Souris and Gerzido are among the authorised anchorages. No services at the anchorage itself. Port-Clos ferry harbour 0.4 NM N for water, a few shops and the passenger link to Pointe de l'Arcouest. Port Adhoc 4 NM SW at Paimpol for full services.
Ashore
Bréhat is a car-free island, paths connect the south island to the north island across the Vauban bridge, 1.5 km from Port-Clos. Landing at low water means crossing mud, gravel and shells, so wear shoes. Moulin du Birlot tide mill, Paon lighthouse on the north tip, and the Rosaire chapel.
History
Bréhat is known as l'île aux fleurs thanks to a mild microclimate that allows mimosas, agapanthus and eucalyptus to grow outdoors. The island was classified as a site naturel in 1907, one of the earliest such classifications in France.
