Guide
Approach and anchoring
Entry from the north through the Kerpont channel or from the south via the Ferlas channel, both strongly tidal with currents up to 4 knots at springs. Approach at slack water. Numerous rocks and drying heads, buoyage cardinal. Anchoring is now banned in La Corderie; pick up a commune visitor buoy at the channel entrance or dry out in the mud. A dead mooring lies sunk just in front of the outer visitor buoys and can foul an anchor.
Practical
White or green visitor buoys managed by the port of Bréhat, around 18 to 23 euros a night with no services, plus a picnic tax of about 7 euros for a short stop. Holding is limited for deep keels at low water of springs and the bay dries in places; boats that dry out sink into soft clay, with buried metal debris towards the southern end. Showers at the campsite at the far end of the island. Village shops, bakery and restaurants on the main island, 15 minutes on foot from Port-Clos. Water at the quay in Port-Clos, no fuel on the island.
Ashore
Footpath around Île de Bréhat, car-free island of 318 hectares. Moulin du Birlot tidal mill to the south at 1 km, Chapelle Saint-Michel viewpoint at 500 m. Phare du Paon at the northern tip, 2 km walk across the island.
History
The name Corderie comes from the royal rope factory established here in the 17th century, which supplied the navy at Brest with cordage made from local hemp. The archipelago was fortified under Vauban.
