Guide
Approach and anchoring
Approach via the Passe de l'Ouest or Passe du Sud into the Rade de Lorient. Watch for commercial and naval traffic from the Lorient military base and the ferry to Groix. Hold clear of the marked fairway. Bottom of sand with patches of rock and algae; holding is good on the fine sand and less reliable on the weed. Wash from the ferry and passing motorboats makes it roll through the day and it settles once traffic stops in the evening.
Practical
No services on the anchorage itself. Port de Kernevel and the Toulhars mooring field lie close by to the west for shelter and fuel. Land by dinghy at the small fishing harbour to the west or at the coves near the town centre, with shops, bakeries and restaurants a short walk from the beach. Boats can lie alongside the concrete south quay for a few hours over the tide, though it dries there to about 1.2 metres.
Ashore
Grande Plage de Larmor-Plage runs along the shore with a paved promenade. The coastal path GR 34 passes through the town and continues east toward Port-Louis at 1 NM, with its 17th-century Vauban citadel and Compagnie des Indes museum.
History
Larmor-Plage grew as a seaside resort of Lorient in the late 19th century. Local tradition records that outbound ships of the Compagnie des Indes used to salute the statue of Notre-Dame de Larmor from the roadstead before heading offshore.
