Guide
Approach and anchoring
Open approach from the east along the sandy Languedoc shoreline. Bottom is rock, holding is uneven so drop the anchor on a clear patch and check the set. Shelter from N and NW winds only; southerly and easterly swell rolls straight in. One reported way in from the sea runs under a bridge at the grau de la Corrège and is passable only by small craft, with an often strong current, so it is not suitable for sailing yachts. No VHF service on site.
Practical
No facilities at the anchorage itself. Port Leucate lies 1.9 nm to the east with a full marina and fuel berth. Coudalere is 3.6 nm to the south as a secondary refuge if the tramontane kicks in overnight.
Ashore
Fitou village sits about 3 km inland and is the only Languedoc AOC producing exclusively red wine, classified since 1948. Étang de Leucate and its flamingo colony are a short walk behind the beach.
Story
Fitou was the first red wine AOC granted in Languedoc-Roussillon, two decades before the wider regional appellations.
