Guide
Approach and anchoring
Open roadstead on the Mediterranean coast between Canet and Port-la-Nouvelle. Sand bottom, drop the hook clear of the swimming zone. Exposed to easterly winds and swell. Tramontane blows from the W.
Practical
Forain anchorage on sand, no services afloat. A channel gives access to the beach for a tender landing, and a small Casino supermarket sits a few hundred metres north of the wreck for basic provisioning. Port Nautica lies 1.2 NM to the SW and Coudalère marina 1.3 NM to the SW for berths, fuel, water and shops.
Ashore
The Lydia, a former passenger liner beached in 1967, sits on the shore and now houses a museum and leisure venue. Long sandy beach on both sides. Étang de Leucate and its oyster farms 3 km to the north.
History
The Lydia was built in 1931 in Scotland as the Moonta and ended her career as a cruise ship before being hauled onto the beach in 1967 as part of the Racine plan for the development of the Languedoc coast.
