Approach and anchoring

Entry via the grau de Leucate, a narrow controlled channel subject to tramontane wind squalls from the NW. The pass has shoaled and now carries as little as 1 metre in places, even along the old dredged line, so sound carefully through the pass. Keep between the lateral marks and watch for fishing nets. Once inside, depths in the lagoon run 1 to 2 m on sand and mud, with shallow patches, and anchoring is off limits in the protected zones on the Coudalère side.

Practical

Forain anchorage on sand and mud, holding rated good. Shelter from the NE, E and SE, fully exposed to the tramontane from NW. Port de Coudalère 1.2 NM S and Port Nautica 1.4 NM S serve as the nearest refuges and offer full services.

Ashore

Leucate windsurfing and kitesurfing spot on the seaward side of the lagoon, used for a stage of the Mondial du Vent each April. Cape of Leucate cliff and lighthouse 3 km NE of the grau, the only coastal cliff between the Rhône and the Spanish border.
