Approach and anchoring
Entrance from the east between two jetties on a low sandy shore. The channel silts steadily and depth is often well below the charted 1.85 m, less after storms, so keep to the middle between the marks; keel boats have grounded here. Shallow banks lie to the north of the approach. Tramontane from NW funnels down the lido and can reach 40 knots. The office frequently does not answer VHF 9, berths are on piles and there is little help to moor in a crosswind.
Practical
1400 berths for boats up to around 15 m. Fuel berth with diesel and petrol available 24 hours, water and power at the pontoons, travel hoist and winter hard standing. The sanitary block at the harbour office is new and clean. Shops and restaurants along the quay, a Super U about 20 minutes on foot. Under new management, the harbour office email is now capitainerie@lebarcares.fr.
Ashore
The Lydia, a former liner grounded on the beach in 1967, stands 400 m from the port as a local landmark. Long sandy lido beach right next to the marina. Salses-Leucate lagoon behind the lido for kite surfing and oyster farms, fortress of Salses 15 km inland.
