Working fishing port and marina of 304 berths on the south Finistère coast, opposite the walled Ville Close.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Straightforward approach from the Baie de la Forêt, channel buoyed between Men Fall and La Médée beacons. No tidal gate on the marina pontoons. The staff come out in a rib to meet arrivals at the entrance and help them berth. Beware the fishing fleet entering and leaving at all hours, and note that the floating wave break is less effective in strong SW winds, when the exposed hammerheads take a battering. VHF 9 for the marina.
Practical
304 berths on the west bank, max draught 2.5 metres. There are no visitor bookings, so call the office on the day of arrival; in peak season the port fills and boats may be rafted up or sent to buoys in the Anse de Kersaux at Le Cabellou. Charging is now by area, around 50 euros a night in high season, half price for TransEurope Marinas members. Diesel on the fuel pontoon, shared with the fishing fleet and reachable only about three hours either side of high water. Water, electricity, showers, chandlery and boatyard on site, free bikes at the office and a public launderette nearby. All shops within 500 metres.
Ashore
Ville Close, the granite-walled old town on its islet, linked by footbridge at 400 metres from the marina. Musée de la Pêche on rue Vauban documents Concarneau's industrial tuna and sardine fleet. Plage des Sables Blancs at 2 km north.
History
Concarneau's Ville Close was fortified by Vauban between 1683 and 1695 on medieval foundations. The port became France's third fishing port by tonnage in the 20th century and still hosts an offshore tuna fleet.
