Anchorage in the bay of Concarneau in southern Brittany, sand bottom, just outside the Ville Close.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Approach from the south through the buoyed channel into the bay of Concarneau. Sand gives good holding, and quieter water lies behind the breakwater among the fishing buoys, roughly 6 m at high water. Exposed to S winds rolling into the bay, though one crew lay well in a 15 knot NE. The anchorage rolls when boats motor past and fishing craft leave early. Concarneau port is 0.3 nm NE, Cap Coz 2.6 nm NW as alternative.
Practical
Land the tender at the pier in the harbour basin alongside the fishing boats. A well-stocked sail loft stands near the quay, and Concarneau has fuel, water, chandlery and supplies close to town.
Ashore
The Ville Close, a walled granite town begun in the 14th century on an islet in the harbour, is reached on foot from the landing. Musée de la Pêche in the old arsenal documents the tuna and sardine fleet. Fish market on the quai Carnot.
