Port of 400 berths in the bay of Cassis, between Cap Canaille and the calanque of Port-Miou, within the Calanques National Park.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Approach on sight from seaward. Entrance marked by red and green lights at the jetty heads. Watch for the mistral funnelling into the bay from the northwest. Staff come out by dinghy to guide visitors to a berth and help with lines. The basin is small and some berths at the jetty head are tight, needing fenders both sides, and passing tripper boats send a swell in so a berth can be rolly. Maximum draught 3 m. VHF channel 9.
Practical
400 berths, though visitor berths are few so a place is not guaranteed. Booking is by email only and taken on the day of arrival, often sent after midnight for a reply the next morning. Berthing runs among the dearest in the region, above Marseille. Fuel berth with diesel on the pontoon. Water and shore power, and Wi-Fi at the port. Harbour office open year-round. All shops and restaurants of the village within 200 m.
Ashore
Coastal path to the calanque of Port-Miou 1.5 km from the port, at the gate of the Calanques National Park. Market Wednesday and Friday mornings on Place Baragnon 250 m away. The restaurant La Vieille Auberge and the Brasserie Liautaud sit by the port. Route des Crêtes up to Cap Canaille 7 km east, the highest maritime cliff in France at 394 m.
History
Cassis is a fishing port documented since the 12th century. The town drew painters Derain, Matisse and Dufy in the early 20th century and inspired Provençal poet Frédéric Mistral.
