Harbour of 235 berths on the west coast of Corsica, between the Golfe de Sagone and the Golfe de Porto.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Approach from seaward is clear in daylight, entrance on jetty lights. Maximum draught 3 m. Shelter is good from all sectors except west to south-west, where the Libeccio makes the berths uncomfortable. Call on VHF 9 and staff come out to help moor. Berthing is bow-to on a stern line; the quay stands high and hides a submerged step, so single-rudder yachts go in bow-first to keep the rudder clear, and a rock lies off the east end of the fuel dock. There is room to anchor in the bay and land a dinghy free by the harbour office.
Practical
235 berths with water and electricity, but the harbour takes no reservations, so arrive early as visitor space is limited. The office closes around 6 pm and at lunchtime. Fuel berth for diesel, around 2.20 euros a litre. Showers and toilets at the capitainerie. Berthing runs dear, around 70 euros for a 12 m boat. Shops and restaurants sit in the upper village, a 400 m climb, and the Spar delivers provisioning to the quay from 50 euros.
Ashore
Two parish churches face each other across the village square, a Latin Catholic church and a Greek Catholic church, both 19th century, reflecting the Greek colony founded here in 1676. Plage de Pero 2 km north, sand and pebbles. Plage de Chiuni 5 km north, 1 km of sand. Restaurant Les Deux Cloches in the village.
History
Cargèse was settled in 1676 by a group of about 730 Greeks from Mani in the Peloponnese, fleeing Ottoman rule. The Greek rite community persists and the Eastern Catholic church still celebrates the Byzantine liturgy.
Story
Cargèse hosts a physics research centre founded in 1975, the Institut d'études scientifiques de Cargèse, which has welcomed Nobel laureates including Gerard 't Hooft and Frank Wilczek.
