Guide
Approach and anchoring
Approach from the south-west, leaving the Isolotti rocks to starboard. The bottom is mostly rock with small sand patches, so holding is unreliable; search out a clear patch and a trip line on the anchor is wise. The better sand lies on the east side of the bay, and the mooring buoys in the cove are private, so many skippers prefer the sandy bay immediately to the east. Anchor in 5 to 12 m. VHF 9. Shelter from NW, N, NE and W, exposed to the SW swell, which sets it rolling in a libeccio.
Practical
Fuel and water at the harbour quay 0.1 nm west. A dinghy can be left on the harbour jetties, in front of the capitainerie, to go ashore. Shops, bakery and restaurants around the port, with a well-stocked SPAR supermarket at the top of the village open daily. Next refuge Port de Sagone 4.1 nm east.
Ashore
Cargèse village sits on a clifftop above the bay, a steep climb from the port. Two churches face each other on the main square, the Latin rite church of the Assumption and the Greek rite church of Saint-Spyridon, both 19th century. On the harbour, Chez Charlotte and U Rasaghju are well regarded for fresh fish. Sand beaches at Péru to the north and Menasina to the east within walking distance.
History
Cargèse was founded in 1676 by Greek families from Itylo in the Mani, who fled Ottoman rule under Venetian protection. Their descendants still celebrate the Greek Orthodox liturgy in the village.
