Guide

Approach and anchoring

Approach from seaward via the Pointe de Combrit leading line, between the Pyramide de Combrit and the Ar Men beacons; the approach is littered with pot buoys for about 5 miles out, so it is no place to close in after dark. Strong cross-tide across the river mouth on springs, up to 3 knots, so time movements for slack. The visitor pontoon sits very low, only about 175 mm above the water, and its solid edge can slip under the hull, so keep fenders low and avoid an outside berth where the current pins the boat on. VHF 9.

Practical

493 berths, a fuel berth with diesel, water, showers, WC, a chandlery and an on-site launderette. Unlike most marinas nearby, electricity is charged on top of the berth and there is little or no WiFi, and the stopover passport is not accepted. Reckon on roughly 32 to 46 euros a night. A Carrefour is a pleasant 500 to 800 m walk along the waterfront, with the town centre and beaches within 500 m.

Ashore

Plage du Trez at 600 metres east, sandy and sheltered. Promenade along the Corniche de la Mer towards the Pointe Saint-Gilles lighthouse. River boat trips up the Odet to Quimper, one of the tidal rivers most visited by plaisanciers in Brittany.

History

Bénodet developed as a resort in the late 19th century after the Quimper railway reached the coast in 1884. The Odet estuary has been used as a safe refuge since the medieval period and was described by early 20th century yachtsmen as the Riviera of Brittany.
