Historic harbour of 263 berths below the citadel of Bastia, capital of Haute-Corse, on the north-east coast of the island.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Approach from the east, entrance between the Dragon jetty to the north and the Saint-Nicolas jetty on red and green lights. Maximum draught 3.8 m. Surge builds inside the basin with strong easterlies and a north-easterly swell, which sets boats snatching hard at their lines. The reception quay hides a submerged step at its foot, so keep the stern well off to spare the rudder; the office lends boarding planks. Avoid the ferry lane 700 m north. VHF 9 and the phone often go unanswered, so entering to take a berth in person may be the surer bet.
Practical
263 berths, visitor pontoon on the north side, but space is tight so arrive early; berths can be booked through resaportcorse.com. Fuel berth with diesel and petrol. Water and electricity are included in the fee, but showers are metered at 2 euros by coin and are few in number, with toilets that have no seats. Around 60 euros for an 11 m boat. Restaurants and cafes ring the basin, and the U express in town delivers provisioning to the quay free of charge, welcome given the stairways.
Ashore
The Terra Nova citadel, built by the Genoese from 1380, overlooks the port from the south headland and houses the Musée de Bastia in the former governors' palace. Place Saint-Nicolas, the largest square in Corsica at 300 m long, is 200 m north of the port. The twin-towered church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste rises over the north quay. A tourist train runs a citadel tour from the tourist office by the ferry terminal, and Paolini Gourmet near the basin sells ice cream.
History
The harbour was the seat of Genoese rule over Corsica from the 14th to the 18th century, replacing Biguglia as administrative capital. Pasquale Paoli declared Corsican independence here in 1755, and the city was briefly the island's capital again under British protection in 1794.
