Sand anchorage off the old port of Bastia, on the east coast of Corsica.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Anchor on clean sand in 6 to 10 metres off the small beach, picking a sand patch as the posidonia beds are protected and hold poorly. Shelter is from N, W and NW, the bay staying open to E, SE and S with swell straight off the Tyrrhenian Sea. The main nuisance is wash from the ferries working in and out of the harbour, which rolls the anchorage heavily even with no wind and eases only after nightfall.
Practical
No facilities at the anchorage, which serves mainly as the overflow when the old port of Bastia 0,4 nm N is full, guest berths there being scarce for larger yachts. Land by dinghy at the floating pontoon reserved for tenders on the starboard side of the old port entrance, where there is a self-service fuel berth. The capitainerie answers phone and email and can point out a tender space. Port Toga lies 1,2 nm N.
Ashore
A good market fills the square beside the church with Corsican produce, fruit and vegetables. There are rubbish bins on the small beach about 80 metres from the dinghy landing. The old town and citadel of Bastia are a short walk from the harbour.
