Guide
Approach and anchoring
Approach from the gulf, 4.4 nm south of Port Tino Rossi in Ajaccio. Anchoring is no longer permitted, so pick up one of the buoys, and a lasso through the ring helps when short-handed. Watch for submerged rocks and pebbles inshore towards the beach. Good shelter from south-west through south to south-east, exposed to west and to the libeccio, which sends in a swell. VHF channel 9.
Practical
The buoys belong to the Pietrosella regulated anchorage run by the commune, and in Sainte-Barbe they are often all taken from April to September. Use is free by day but charged by night, and the night rate is steep, around 50 euros for a 10 to 11 m boat and 60 euros for 12 to 13 m. A rib reads the moorings daily in season. Ask through the commune on 04 95 53 50 50 or the boatman on 07 89 41 65 99. No services on the water. Port Tino Rossi in Ajaccio lies 4.4 nm north for fuel, water, berths and all shops.
Ashore
The headland takes its name from the Sainte-Barbe chapel above the cove. A beach restaurant stays open through the day, and the Casa Medea straw hut about 10 minutes away serves aperitifs, with a supermarket a short walk further on. The wreck of the tug Mario lies just south of the buoy field in shallow water and can be explored with a snorkel. Beaches of Trottel and Scudo are within walking distance.
History
The Gulf of Ajaccio was the birthplace of Napoleon Bonaparte in 1769. Ajaccio's old town, 4 nm to the north, keeps his birth house, now the Musée national de la Maison Bonaparte.
