Approach and anchoring

Approach from the north in settled weather. The bottom is mostly rock and posidonia with only a few small sand pockets, hard to pick out, so aim carefully and accompany the anchor on retrieval, and beware the large white rocks near the point that look like sand. Keep off the shore, where private buoys and boat channels lie and the bottom shoals fast, and stay outside the 300 metre yellow buoys. Shelter from SE, S and SW, exposed to the northerlies that funnel down the gulf. Porto Pollo lies 6.4 NM south as a fallback.

Ashore

Forest of Chiavari rises directly behind the shore, 1 600 hectares of maritime pine and cork oak managed by the Office National des Forets. Waymarked forest tracks lead inland. The Genoese tower of Capo di Muro stands on the headland 2 nm to the south.

History

The site takes its name from a short-lived penal colony set up in 1855 to clear the coastal marshes. Malaria forced its closure in 1906. The forest was later replanted to stabilise the soil.
