Guide
Approach and anchoring
Approach from the west between the Pointe du Toulinguet and the Tas de Pois, then round the Sillon. Sand bottom with good holding on the ridge north of the Sillon, in about 6 to 10 metres. Shelter from E through S to W, but an Atlantic swell from the N and NW creeps into the bay and makes it rolly, so it is most comfortable in easterly or southerly winds. VHF 9 for Port Vauban.
Practical
Around 20 white visitor buoys cost roughly 15 to 21 euros a night, about half the marina rate, and include the marina showers, dinghy dock and waste disposal; boats may also anchor free beyond the buoy field. Water and a 24 hour self-service fuel berth for diesel and petrol at Port Vauban, 0.2 nm. Land the dinghy at the marina dock by the access to the pontoons, or the ramps near the boatyard. Bakery, grocery, chandler, restaurants and a large supermarket are within a short walk of the Sillon quay.
Ashore
Tour Vauban on the Sillon, built 1689 to 1696 under Vauban, listed on the UNESCO world heritage list in 2008 as part of the twelve Vauban fortifications. Alignments of Lagatjar, 143 standing stones, at 1.5 km on foot. GR34 coastal path to the Pointe de Pen-Hir cliffs at 3.5 km.
History
The English and Dutch fleet of Admiral Berkeley was repelled here on 18 June 1694 by Vauban himself, firing the guns of the unfinished tower. The painter Eugène Boudin worked in the bay in the 1870s.
