Anchorage near the Île des Morts at the entrance of the rade de Brest, off the presqu'île de Crozon, where anchoring between the two islands is now restricted as a military zone.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Approach from the goulet de Brest. Mud and sand bottom, good holding, sheltered from the E, SW and W and open to N and NE winds. Tidal streams in the goulet are strong, so plan arrival near slack water. Anchoring between the two islands is now treated as a military zone: crews have been moved on by the navy and the restriction is charted, while landing on the islands is prohibited. The anchorage off Roscanvel, opposite, is an alternative sheltered from the sea and westerly winds.
Practical
No services on site. Camaret Port Vauban 2,6 NM to the SW for berths, water and shops. Camaret Bassin du Nautique 2,7 NM to the SW for the visitors pontoons.
Ashore
Pointe des Espagnols, 2 km to the north, overlooks the goulet de Brest and carries Vauban-era fortifications. Tour Vauban of Camaret, built 1689 to 1696 and listed by UNESCO as part of the Fortifications of Vauban in 2008, is 3 km by road from the anchorage area.
History
The island was used as a cholera burial ground in 1849, which gave it its present name.
