Guide

Approach and anchoring

Approach from the west-south-west, leaving the Tas de Pois rocks off the Pointe de Pen-Hir to starboard. The bay opens 2.1 nautical miles south-east of Camaret. Anchor on sand in 4 to 8 metres, holding good, but keep off the beaches, where the west swell breaks for surfers and the current runs hard. Shelter from the north round to the south-east is exceptional even in fresh winds, and shallow-draught boats can tuck further in for cover from the south or a WNW blow. Exposure to the south-west and west lets Atlantic swell in. A handy place to wait out the tide for the Raz de Sein when heading south.

Practical

Forain anchorage with no services. Camaret-sur-Mer Bassin du Nautique, 2.1 NM north-west, has water, electricity, fuel and showers. Port Vauban in Camaret, 2.3 NM north-west, adds visitor berths in the wet basin.

Ashore

Pointe de Pen-Hir and the Tas de Pois, classified Grand Site de France, 3 km north on the GR 34. Around the Pointe de Dinan to the south are sea caves at the foot of the Château de Dinan rock and a natural stone arch, reachable by dinghy. Beach at Kerloc'h on the eastern shore of the bay. Village of Crozon with shops 5 km inland.

History

The Alignements de Lagatjar, a Neolithic site of standing stones, lies 2 km inland from the bay near Camaret. The Pointe de Pen-Hir bears a monument to Free French Breton sailors.
