Approach and anchoring

The York River carries deep water close to the waterfront, with 27 to 50 ft alongside the town piers. Holding is on mud. Sheltered from W, SW and S winds, open to the north and east. Riverwalk Landing Marina lies 0.3 miles NW and the VIMS boat basin 0.8 miles N.

Practical

Riverwalk Landing offers about 1,200 ft of transient dockage with power, water and pump-out, plus mooring balls. The dockmaster can be reached on 757 890 3370. Waterfront restaurants, a brewery and shops line Water Street within a short walk.

Ashore

Yorktown Battlefield, part of Colonial National Historical Park, adjoins the town and is reached on foot. The American Revolution Museum sits 0.7 miles SW. The mile-long Riverwalk runs along the shore past the Victory Monument.

History

Yorktown was the site of the final major engagement of the American War of Independence. In October 1781 a Franco-American army under Washington and Rochambeau, backed by de Grasse's fleet blocking the Chesapeake, forced the surrender of Lord Cornwallis on 19 October 1781.
