Approach and anchoring
Anchor inside Charleston Harbour, west of Fort Sumter and its companion Fort Moultrie at the harbour entrance. The bottom is sand and the spot is open to the northern quadrant, where harbour fetch and wash from passing traffic can build.
Practical
Tolers Cove Marina lies 2 nm NE. Shem Creek, on the Mount Pleasant side opposite the Charleston peninsula, is 2.3 nm N and lined with waterfront restaurants and kayak landings.
History
Fort Sumter, a sea fort begun in 1829 on an artificial island at the harbour mouth, was the site of the opening engagement of the American Civil War in April 1861.
