Approach and anchoring

The transient anchoring area sits in the southern part of the harbour, marked by white and orange buoys. Depths run roughly 3 to 4.5 metres over a mud bottom with good holding. The approach channel from West Neck Bay has shoaled below charted depths, so favour rising water and watch the sounder on the way in.

Practical

Shelter Island town rules cap non-resident stays at 48 hours within any 72-hour period between 15 May and 15 September. Island Boatyard lies 0.6 nautical miles north for repairs and supplies, with Coecles Harbor Marina and Boatyard 2.4 nautical miles north-east.

Ashore

A dinghy landing at Island Boatyard puts boaters within walking distance of Shelter Island's quiet back roads. Mashomack, a Nature Conservancy reserve covering a third of the island, has marked walking trails about 3 kilometres from the harbour.
