Approach and anchoring
Enter Ala Wai Harbor through the dredged channel cut for the Ala Wai Canal, behind the 1,460-foot breakwater built in 1967. Reciprocal access for visiting members of affiliated clubs.
Practical
Clubhouse with restaurant, bar, pool and gym for members and reciprocal guests. The wider Ala Wai Boat Harbor is the largest state-run small-boat harbour in Hawaii. Hawaii Yacht Club lies 0.1 nm south-west on the same harbour.
Ashore
Ala Moana Beach Park and Magic Island fronts the harbour to the east. Ala Moana Center shopping mall sits 600 m north. Waikiki Beach starts about 1 km east along Ala Moana Boulevard.
History
Founded in 1944 by 37 charter members from the closed Pearl Harbor Yacht Club, after wartime restrictions blocked civilian access to Pearl Harbor. Founding board included swimmer Duke Kahanamoku. Clubhouse built in two phases in 1953 and 1967.
