Ashore
Pont-canal de Briare spans the Loire 700 m from the quay. Designed by Léonce-Abel Mazoyer and built with Eiffel for the metal structure, inaugurated in 1896, it was the longest canal bridge in the world until 2003 at 662 m. Musée des Deux Marines et du Pont-Canal in town covers canal history.
History
The Canal de Briare, opened in 1642 under Henri IV and Sully, was the first summit-level canal built in Europe and linked the Loire to the Seine basin.
