Approach and anchoring

Approach on the Canal latéral à la Loire, Freycinet gauge. Berths take boats up to 38 m length and 1,80 m draught, reservation advised. During busy periods additional moorings are available at the Mantelot basin, just upstream at the historic former river crossing lock.

Practical

Ashore

The Pont-canal de Briare, 662 m long and built by Gustave Eiffel's workshop between 1890 and 1896, crosses the Loire 3 km north of the port and can be reached on foot or by bike along the towpath. The former Écluse de Mantelot, classed historic monument, sits 500 m from the berths and marks the old 1838 to 1896 canal crossing over the Loire itself.

History

Until 1896, boats leaving the Canal latéral crossed the Loire by the Mantelot dyke channel, about one kilometre across the river between the Mantelot lock on the left bank and the Combles lock on the right bank. The crossing was hazardous, with nearly ten shipwrecks a year, which led to the construction of the Briare aqueduct, inaugurated on 16 September 1896.
